Growth and development of fetal trabecular micro-architecture

INTRODUCTION Very little is known about prenatal growth and development of trabecular micro-architecture [1-4]. Yet the quantity and quality of fetal bone laid down in early life is thought to have a significant impact on adult bone quality and senescent bone disease [5]. Understanding the mechanisms determining fetal bone growth may give insights into those factors determining bone quality in adult life, including the incidence of osteoporotic bone fractures, which blight old age. While the pattern of infant bone development is well described, this study set out to describe the ontogeny of fetal trabecular micro-architecture in the upper and lower limb bones, in the weightless environment of the uterus.
